#3 Schools are coming alive!

“Actions, not words, are the ultimate
results of leadership.”BILL OWENS

Married 29 years to
this guy! 😍

I had a wonderful birthday weekend in VT hiking, visiting farmers markets, and imbibing in some of the best beers in the northeast!

In my past districts, students started school Tuesday-Thursday before Labor Day. As a result, I was able to breathe during the long weekend. I could never rest before the first day with so much that had to kick into gear. So, I am worried about all of you, who may be sleepless with first day jitters over the weekend. TRY to take some time; students arrive no matter what next week. All this is part of the job - knowing we have this one chance to set the tone for the year; knowing that students don't get do-overs. Nevertheless, I love the excitement and potential of a new school year - thank you for all you do!

Data

The next major date to look for is September 4 when reports will be available in Edwin Analytics. Meanwhile, your school's ODA folder also contains preliminary reports in an (Embargoed Folder). You can share these data with staff, with the caveat that the information be used for educational and/or planning purposes.

Climate Survey Results

password: boston!

Link to MCIEA Site (staff)

Student survey results are in Panorama. This survey has information about how students feel on topics such as engagement, academic press, grit, belongingness, etc... If you are working on increasing student engagement and on relationships, you and your climate team should review these data with staff and set a QSP measurable goal for the end of the year.

Transportation Information

Should be in DataWarehouse by Friday. Please keep in mind that changes will continue over the weekend and be careful about printing "pending" information. Also, wait until later next week to prepare kindergarten tags.

Message from Mark Cardarelli from Public Works (Highlighted sentences are from his communication 😂)

Per BTD and PWD Directive, No Construction Work Will Be Allowed On Our RED LINE STREETS On OPENING Day September 5th. This Will Include Occupancy Work. ( See attached list )

In addition no work will be allowed within a designated school zone without permission from the principal or headmaster

All utility companies and private contractors must provide access to school buses needing to enter their work zone. Crews must give the highest priority to school buses providing them a safe lane of travel without undue delay. The City appreciates your cooperation.

  • Any questions you have about the process

FAQs:

An overview of the observation process is as follows:
  • What: Classroom observations as part of DESE’s district review of BPS
  • Who: Observations will be conducted by certified and experienced American Institutes for Research (AIR) staff
  • When: September 30 –October 11, 2019
  • Where: 100 schools across BPS
  • How: AIR staff will be using the CLASS tool published by Teachstone (additional information on CLASS is attached)

Please consider participating in this opportunity with a team. Last year, the following schools participated: Kilmer, Quincy Lower, Warren-Prescott, Russell, Lyon. This is a wonderful collaboration with the Harvard Portal and the ODA Team and led by our own Sarah Jay.

Hold these dates!

#2 Updates: OLs, Liaisons, ALI Follow-up

November PD Date Change

Please note: We need to change the November 7th Principal PD date due to the ISEE administration at your buildings. We will probably return to the November 14th date. Please plan to log in observations in TeachPoint prior to the PD day. I apologize for any confusion. The PD calendar link is on the right lower side of this blog under "Important Links."

Operational Leaders Assigned

We expect to have a more comprehensive list of liaisons soon. Meanwhile, we still have Operational Leaders. Regions 2, 3 and HS have dedicated OLs. A Region 1 OL search is underway. Right now, the current OLs are divided up this way:

August Leadership Institute 2019 - Follow Up

Thank you for kicking off the 2019-2020 school year strong with us at ALI 2019! We enjoyed getting to explore the BPS Core Values of Joy, Unity, Inclusion, Collaboration, and Equity together, reflect on leadership, and dive into content sessions together. We are so excited for the year ahead!

Below are a few follow up items and documents from ALI. Feel forward to share this with others at your school who attended ALI or would like to check out what we worked on.

  • End of Day Surveys for Feedback and PDPs due EOD Thurs 8/22: Your feedback is important to us and guides how we plan and structure your learning throughout the year as well as the direction of ALI next year. Please complete the survey for any day you have not yet completed. Please note: PDPs are counted by survey completion. In order to receive PDPs for your attendance and participation, you must complete the survey for each day.
  • Superintendent Cassellius’ Story: During ALI, Superintendent Cassellius shared her personal story and “why” behind what drives to serve as the Superintendent of the Boston Public Schools. A brief, written version of her story can be found here.
  • How to Order JUICE and #BPSProud Buttons for your School: Here you can find a document outlining how your school can purchase JUICE or #BPSProud Buttons as well as links to the graphics used.
  • Accessing Session Materials: You can access session information, workshop resources, and the end of day Surveys on the ALI 2019 webpage. The ALI team is following up with presenters to fill in missing materials as soon as possible.
  • Professional Development: We’ll be following up with you soon about PLCs and professional development dates for the upcoming school year.
  • Mr. Joy performance Wednesday, August 28th, 7:30 PM, Emerson Cutler Majestic Theater, 219 Tremont Street, Boston, MA 02116. RSVP by Monday, August 26th: akiba_abaka@emerson.edu

#1 Welcome back!

Your inspiration taps hidden reserves of promise that sustain people through times that induce despair. You enable people to envision a future that sustains the best from their past while also holding out new possibilities.”

― Ronald Heifetz, The Practice of Adaptive Leadership: Tools and Tactics for Changing Your Organization and the World

Dear Region 1 Leaders,

Andrea and I are going to work together to create a single blog for all schools in Region 1 (list below). Right now, I'm trying to get information out; just know it is our intent to send a singular message.

It was great seeing almost all of you at August Leadership Institute last week. The stories of Dr. Cassellius, John King, and Jaime Casap could be the children who currently attend our schools. They each defied the odds and became teachers and leaders because of teachers, because of school. How do we inspire our staff to believe every student belongs? It is our job to create a culture where adults are inspired to create a space where students feel they belong and can be their best - perhaps unimagined - selves.

We are excited about a new school year and working with each of you to bring our schools to the next level.

Congratulations!

The three School on the Move Finalists have been announced: Bradley, Harvard-Kent, and Kenny. I look forward to the School o the Move Prize Ceremony on October 31, 2019. Congratulations, also, to all the qualifying schools - keep trying!

This Blog

Grace/Andrea will use this format to communicate and will email the link to you each time a post is published. You (and members of your leadership team) are welcome to enter your email at the bottom of this page to follow the blog. Those who sign up should receive an automated email notification when a new post is published.

<<To Do>>

***Please share your PD/Meeting (ILT/CPT) Calendars with your supervisor. A Google Calendar would be most convenient!

Grace plans to stop by during your before school PD or your first day(s) with staff. She also plans to stop by during the first week of school.

Visit Calendar

There is a tab at the top of this page that is Grace's school visit calendar.  Use this calendar for important testing dates, school committee/district calendar/community items as well. To keep it simple, it does not include everything, just school visits. At first, it will be a draft for your review. Grace is behind on its creation at the moment!

Data

First, a shout out to ODA for the quick turnaround between data arriving and creating usable files for your ODA folder. If you have a moment, please send emails of kudos to Monica Hogan and Mary Dillman.

Embargoed MCAS Data

Aggregate scaled scores only gives you a small picture of whether or not your school met targets.

THIS Friday, August 23Full preliminary student-level MCAS results in DropBox

LAST Friday, August 16 Full official ACCESS results in Edwin Analytics

Actual Student Writing with rubric scores are available in Pearson.

All of this information, when finalized, will be housed in Data Warehouse. Staff will be able to view their own students based on how they are set up in Aspen. Write datawarehouse@ to obtain schoolwide permission for your support staff and/or teacher leaders. This will take the weight off of you to print/download everything.

School ODA Folder

If you haven't found it already: You have several types of files in your school's ODA folder with file title <SchoolName School 4-digit # ODA Data>. Then look for the file <Preliminary 2019 MCAS (EMBARGOED)> where there are several Excel files that work best if downloaded into Excel rather than viewing in Google Sheets:

  • Most recent aggregate scaled scores for All Students, by Race, EL, SWD, Economically Disadvantaged
  • Preliminary results by standard and domain in ELA, Math, Science (look for version 2 or V2 in the filename)
  • Everyone has access to released questions in Pearson or DESE website.
